Dead or Alive is an excellent fighting game for the Playstation. I consider it on of the best fighting games on the PSX, topped only by the Tekken series.
Graphically, Dead or Alive certainly is a triumph. The characters arehigh resolution and seamlessly rendered, giving them a very round and organic look. Even the the big guys manage to stay smooth and round, which is rare in most Playstation fighting games... Just look at Rival Schools!
Despite the fact that the characters are rich and detailed, the frame rate is awsome. It stays around 50fps thoughout! The only thing lacking graphically is backgrounds. The backgrounds are 2D and undetailed. That's the trade off for great-lookking characters. It's ok, though since you don't take too much time to admire the scenery in a fighting game, right?
Besides graphics, there are some great moves which can be mastered in a training mode. Although some moves seem a little too much trouble to master, others (such as linked throws, like Tekken's) are invaluable. Linking two or three thows together is pretty cool looking and is devistating to your opponent.
A great feature of Dead or Alive is the fact that you can unlock new costumes for your character. There's 14 per female and 5 per male. You get a costume each time you beat the game. It really adds to the replay value of the game.
Then, the last thing that can't go unmentioned is the games beautiful women. Heh heh, that's right. This game's got some the best looking girls ever seen on the PSX. Despite having great looking bodies, the girl's breast's really bounce a lot. Heh, while some people don't like that, my friends and I sure do! So do a lot of people on the EFNet IRC channel, #PSX (visit it now!). If you don't like bouncing boobs, you can always turn the bounce of in the option menu.
Overall, I think Dead or Alive is an excellent game. This is a highly recommend this game, I'd say. Plus, it came out in 1998, so it's gone down in price. I got it for only $30 at my local Toys "R" Us. There is no reason why you shouldn't own this game. Go out and get it if you haven't done so yet!
